Coming Soon – The world wide web was supposed to be one of humanity’s greatest achievements, a place to share ideas, learn anything and reach anyone. Today, reading a single article often means clicking through a cookie banner, a paywall and three clickbait headlines, only to land on a text that may have been written by a machine for another machine.

So what happened? When did the smartphone turn a tool for connecting people into a machine for capturing attention? Why did “enshittification” become the Macquarie Dictionary’s word of the year in 2024, and is it an accident or a business model? Did regulation protect us, or did it only add another banner to click away? And the question I care about most: is there still a way to make the internet usable again, for platforms, for schools, or simply for the person scrolling?
